Resistance Exercise Training Modulation of Fat Metabolism in Obese Postmenopausal Women
Principal Investigators: Robert Hickner, PhD, and Michael Ormsbee, PhD
This study examines changes in body composition, physical fitness, and metabolism in postmenopausal women after completing 12 weeks of either resistance or aerobic exercise training.
Who Can Participate:
- Women between the ages of 50-70 years old who have completed menopause, have excess body fat, and are at risk of developing type II diabetes
- Prospective subjects should not be on any medications to treat chronic disease conditions, not currently partaking in exercise, nor have any cardiorespiratory or musculoskeletal condition that would limit their ability to exercise.
Duration:
- 12 weeks

Who do Women Talk to About Relationship Matters?: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation of Social Networks and Disclosure in Florida
Principal Investigator: Pooja Ichplani
This study compares the interpersonal networks of women survivors of intimate partner violence with those of women at-risk of intimate partner violence. The end goal is to propose recommendations for a social network driven primary prevention program to reduce incidents of intimate partner violence.
Who Can Participate:
- Women who are at least 18 years of age, and have been or currently are in an intimate or romantic relationship for at least three months.
Duration:
- 30 minute survey
Compensation:
- Participants earn $10 upon survey completion.

LGBTQ Retirement Planning Study
Principal Investigator: Koji Ueno, PhD
A research team invites LGBTQ people to participate in an interview study that focuses on their thoughts and plans for retirement as well as their experiences of retirement transitions.
Who Can Participate:
- Identify as non-heterosexual or non-cisgender
- Age between 60 and 75
- Currently working (Those who have previously retired are not eligible for the study, even if they are currently working.)
- Live in the United States
Duration:
- One 60 minute virtual interview over Zoom.

The Effects of Respiratory Muscle Training on Blood Pressure and Respiratory Function
Principal Investigator: Joseph Watso, PhD
This training study looks at the effect of inspiratory (breathing) muscle training on fitness in adults.
Who Can Participate:
- Adults 20-45 years old.
- Have a body mass index (BMI) of 30-40 kg/m2.
- Some exclusion criteria include sleep apnea, asthma, or chronic illnesses.
- Ability to visit FSU campus.
Duration:
- At-home training for 8-weeks - only 5 minutes per day.

A Qualitative Study to Understand Infant Feeding Practices Among Mother-Infant Dyads enrolled in Maternal-Child Home Visiting Programs

The purpose of this study is to gain insight on infant feeding from mothers enrolled in maternal-child home visiting programs and the personnel who serve them.
Who Can Participate:
- Mothers and/or home visitors age 18 years or older
- Mothers who have given birth to a healthy infant in the past 2 years
- Must be fluent in English or Spanish
Duration:
- Around 30 minutes to an hour.
Compensation:
- $30 for completing the study.

Neuromodulation for Dysphoria

The purpose of this study is to identify emerging noninvasive treatment approaches that may help improve symptoms related to Post Partum Depression and Anxiety. You may be eligible for this study, which includes a brief evaluation, Virtual Reality Sessions (VR), and accelerated Transcranial Stimulation (aTMS).
Who Can Participate:
- Mothers with postpartum depression and/or anxiety
Duration:
- A brief evaluation visit, ten Virtual Reality Sessions (VR), and ten accelerated Transcranial Stimulation (aTMS) treatment sessions.
Compensation:

Minduful Pain Management Strategies
Principal Investigator: Adam Hanley
The purpose of this study is to understand how mindfulness practice affects individuals with chronic pain.
Who Can Participate:
- Adults 18 and older
- Diagnosed with Chronic Pain
- No formal mindful training
- Not currently pregnant
Duration:
Participants receive four, 30-minute, manualized treatment sessions led by a trained therapist and prescribed daily at-home mindfulness practice. All appointments will be in-person and will take place at the Brain Science and Symptom Management Center, located at FSU's Innovation Park.
Compensation is up to $150.

Breast Milk Collection for the Study of Infectious Diseases
Principal Investigator: Jarrod Mousa
This study is interested in learning how immunity may be passed on in breastmilk.
Who Can Participate:
- Adults 18+ Years Old
- Weighs at least 110 lbs
Duration:
- Visits are expected to last less than one hour.

SMARTer Weight Loss Management
Principal Investigator: Bonnie Spring
The SMARTer Study is studying to understand what the best strategy for weight-loss and healthy living is by comparing three different programs. Participants receive a free health and weight-loss program with no medications involved!
Who Can Participate:
- Adults 18 and older
- BMI of 25 or higher
- Weighs 396 lbs or less
- Access to a smartphone and willing to add the SMARTer app on the smartphone.
- Is not enrolled in a formal weight loss program
- Does not take any GLP-1 agonists
- Does not use any mobility device such as a cane, mobility scooter, wheelchair, etc.
- Is not an Insulin Dependent Diabetic
- Is not having feeding disorder such as Anorexia or Bulimia
- Has not had any cerebrovascular accident or myocardial infraction within 6 months of enrollment
- Not pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- Not breastfeeding or lactating
- Is not having any suicidal ideations
Duration:
Participants will be enrolled in a 12-month long weight loss program.
Compensation will be provided.

Evaluation of Wearable Breastfeeding Monitoring Systems
Principal Investigator: Te-Yen Wu
This study is testing a smart garment for breastfeeding care.
Who Can Participate:
- Breastfeeding mothers who are 18+
- Has an infant that is ≤ 24 months
Duration:
- Wear our small garment during the breastfeeding and help us record baby’s sucking in mobile app. The visit length is approximately 1 hour. Visits will be located at the FSU CRTU at innovation park.
Compensation of $100 gift card is provided.

Listening Training- Naive Listeners
Principal Investigator: Kaitlin Lansford, PhD
This research study tests a computer-based app used for training listeners on improving intelligibility of listening to individuals who have Parkinson's Disease. The participants will attend 7 in lab visits- Initial visit can take up to 1hr and half, 4 training days in a row each 30 minutes long, Pre/post test follow-ups taking up to 45 minutes. Participants will complete 2 small cognitive assessments during and hearing screening during initial visit.
Who Can Participate:
- 18 years and older.
- Has no hearing impairments.
- Has no history of stroke or other cognitive disorders/disabilities.
- Must be willing to come to the lab for all 6 visits.
Compensation:
- Up to $200 e-gift card upon eligibility and completion of the study.
