The Mousa Lab Blood Bank

Principal Investigator: Jarrod Mousa, PhD

The goal of this study is to create a biorepository of human blood samples for the study of immunity to infectious diseases.

Who Can Participate:

  • Those between the ages of 18 and 65 years old.
  • Those weighing more than 110 lbs.
  • Those fluent in English.

Compensation:

  • $20 gift card for each sample

HippoCamera and Depression Study

Principal Investigator: Valerie Sainterant

This study is interested in researching if hippoCamera memory replay can help increase the mood of older adults with depression, while it also helps improve memories.

Who Can Participate:

  • Adults 65 years of age and/ older
  • Those without a history of seizures
  • Must own a smartphone/table with a camera

Duration:

  • Participation will include an in-person visit to obtain a medical history, some measurements (height, weight, blood pressure, etc.), and draw a single vial of blood. The entire meeting will take no longer than 40-45 minutes.

Minduful Pain Management Strategies

Principal Investigator: Adam Hanley

The purpose of this study is to understand how mindfulness practice affects individuals with chronic pain.

Who Can Participate:

  • Adults 18 and older
  • Diagnosed with Chronic Pain
  • No formal mindful training
  • Not currently pregnant

Duration:

Participants receive four, 30-minute, manualized treatment sessions led by a trained therapist and prescribed daily at-home mindfulness practice. All appointments will be in-person and will take place at the Brain Science and Symptom Management Center, located at FSU's Innovation Park.

Compensation is up to $150.

Development and Preliminary Evaluation of a Tailored Health App Designed to Improve Quality of Life Outcomes in Ethnically Diverse Black Prostate Cancer Survivors

Principal Investigator: Motalani Adedipe

In this study we are exploring a mobile app for Black Prostate Cancer Survivors to share their experiences and improve their quality of life.

Who Can Participate:

  • Men 18 years and older.
  • Are Black, African descent, Caribbean, or Jamaican.
  • Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer within the last 5 years from enrollment date.
  • Access to a smartphone and willing to add the app to their phone.

Duration:

Participants will use the app on their smartphone for 12 months then participate in a focus group.

Compensation of up to $175 will be provided for participant's time.

Listening Training- Naive Listeners

Principal Investigator: Kaitlin Lansford, PhD

This research study tests a computer-based app used for training listeners on improving intelligibility of listening to individuals who have Parkinson's Disease. The participants will attend 1 lab visit that can last up to 2 hours. Participants will complete a quick cognitive assessment and will record short phrases and short stories. If you join the study with a partner one additional recording task that will involve comparing two images called diapix will be completed.

Who Can Participate:

 

  • 50 years and older.
  • Has no hearing impairments or speech disorders.
  • Has no history of stroke or other cognitive disorders/disabilities.
  • Must be willing to come to the lab for up to 2 hours.

Compensation:

  • Up to $70 e-gift card upon eligibility and completion of the study.

Listening Training- Naive Listeners

The participants will attend 7 in lab visits- Initial visit can take up to 1hr and half, 4 training days in a row each 30 minutes long, Pre/post test follow-ups taking up to 45 minutes. Participants will complete 2 small cognitive assessments during and hearing screening during initial visit.

Who Can Participate:

  • 18 years and older.
  • Has no hearing impairments.
  • Has no history of stroke or other cognitive disorders/disabilities.
  • Must be willing to come to the lab for all 6 visits.

Compensation:

Mousa Lab Blood Bank

This research study will collect blood samples from participants so that reschers can examin the antibodies in the blood and how it responds to infectious dieseases.Participants can come either as one time visit or up to 5 visits.

Who Can Participate:

  • 18-80 years old.
  • Weigh 110 lbs or more.
  • HIV and Hepatitis Negative.
  • Not pregnant.
  • Must be willing to come to the CTRU at Innovation Park.

Meditation for Older Adults with Chronic Low Back Pain

Principal Investigator: Jie Chen, PhD

This research study will follow older adults with chronic low back pain for 8 weeks. The study will test the preliminary effect of a mindfulness-based meditation intervention on pain, symptoms and of the Gut Axis. The study would include at home mediation, questionaries, stool samples and sensory testing.

Who Can Participate:

    • 50 years and older.
    • Experiencing chronic low back pain.

Neurolinguistic Investigations of Aphasia and Typical Language Processing

Principal Investigator: Sladjana Lukic, PhD

The study is focused on understanding typical language and language impairment resulting from stroke or dementia.

    • The study involves testing language and cognitive abilities and brain scanning using MRI.
    • Participants time in this study can take up to 4 hours.
    • Who Can Participateas as a healthy participant:

        • 40-85 years old
        • No history of aphasia, head trauma or psychotic disorder.
        • English is your native language.
        • Who Can Participateas an aphasia participant:

            • 40-85 years old
            • History of aphasia as a result of a stroke or dementia .
            • English is your native language.

Exploring the Interactive Effects of Sodium and Potassium on Vascular Health in Older Adults

Principal Investigator: Andrea Lobene

The aim of our study is to determine if potassium can offset the negative effects of a high sodium diet on blood vessel health in older adults.

Who Can Participate:

  • Adults 55–75 years old
  • No history of cardiovascular disease or kidney disease
  • Additional Medical conditions and medications may be exclusionary
  • All participants will complete a screener prior to enrollment.

Duration:

  • Participants in this study will consume three controlled diets for 10 days each and come to our lab for various non-invasive cardiovascular tests.

Compensation is up to $600.
